The Ordinary Niacinamide - Does it work for combination skin?

It certainly has been a long time since my last update!

Throughout these years there were a lot of stress factors and life wasn't great.
And the more stress I have, the more skin problems started to appear.
My face has gotten more pimply and gaining more scars thanks to my poor habits T_T

With the concern in mind, a dear friend of mine suggested me to try Niacinamide with the usual moisturizers that I've been using!

At first, I was skeptical about the pricing because it is surprisingly affordable!
Two bottles of the 30ml serum didn't cost me more than RM50 including shipping, but it worked for my friend that has a combination skin so I thought of giving it a go regardless.

Of course, before buying, I checked out some information on the internet.

So what does Niacinamide do?

From what I manage to read online, Niacinamide is actually Vitamin B3, and it is supposed to reduce the appearance of skin blemishes and congestion.

How does this product feel?

The product itself looks like diluted glue (but not sticky when applied), it is not fully liquid. If you applied too much, you will notice that it is going to form a layer of gel-like texture on your face.

Those with sensitive skin may feel a little sting on your face so you might want to do a little patch testing beforehand. My skin feels a sting on every first try on literally any products and it'll be alright on the following usage, though. It's getting weirder.

The serum will dry down, so no worries!  Also the good thing is that, it doesn't have those perfumey-smell so it is pretty good to begin with.

Did it work?

I have been trying for a month so far, and I'd say that it works - not perfectly but it works a little.

I have a big face (sad) and I had to use like 3 drops minimum to form a thin layer, and there are reduced breakouts so far - unless I am really overly-stressed but that's just my stress management problems.

It also seems to bring out the gunks underneath the skin too, but yeah, still have new breakouts from stress. I need some stress management strategies lolol.

On the bright side, it sort of helps my skin to be a little brighter, but since I am under quarantine here, I haven't been using makeup products very often. I wouldn't use it if I were to put on makeup though.

Are there counterfeits?

Unfortunately, I was also told by my friend that there are apparently counterfeits around.

One way to check it is the color of the product - it should have a milky color.

Another way to check is to test it on paper, it should be absorbed pretty quickly.

Otherwise, you can also patch test a drop on your hand and allow it to dry off. You should feel some gel-ish texture when you rub it lightly.

What does this product contain?

There is a high concentration (10%) of this vitamin is supported in the formula by zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid to balance visible aspects of sebum activity.

Ingredient list: Aqua (Water), Niacinamide, Pentylene Glycol, Zinc PCA, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Tamarindus Indica Seed Gum, Xanthan gum, Isoceteth-20, Ethoxydiglycol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

How do I use this product?

On the package, the instruction says:

Apply to entire face morning and evening before heavier creams. If irritation occurs, cease use and consult a physician. Use only as directed on unbroken skin. Patch testing prior to use is advised.

Additionally, just using a drop (or a couple) and spread it all over your face after your face wash and moisturizer would do. Otherwise it'll be quite difficult to put on makeup and other creams without seeing pieces of gel rolling down from your face. Haha.

Also, if you are using products that has AHA/BHA’s or Vitamin C, skip this product. Combining these products together will cause them to counteract as the pH level increases. This results in each product not serving their purpose, so don’t mix them!

(I kind of abandoned my Etude House's Vita C Talk because it stings lol I haven't even write about that yet)

I also recommend patting the product into the skin instead of rubbing! Since it is gel-ish after all.

Would I recommend it?

It worked well for some people and it didn't work for some, but it's affordable.
For the price, I'd say... why not trying? :)
